Walking through DongDaeMun with ChaeWon, we decided to cut through traffic by walking along the CheongGyeCheon, an urban stream that cuts east to west through Seoul. I felt the stream was so pretty in late Spring with its blue water and tall, green grass, I had to capture it. This was a bit trickier than my other paintings because I wanted to focus on the background, not the subject, but I still needed a subject who wanted to fill the foreground.

  • I saw a white crane flying low just above the water. I took this as a sign of goodluck that I would easily be able to find a subject. I sat down on the top ledge above the CheongGyeCheon, next to a young father and his son. I brought out my portfolio and explained to the father that I was a painter and asked him if he’d like to model for the painting. He asked his young son who was more than enthusiastic. I guided them down across the rock path and got the photos I needed.
